FAQ

Scheduling Questions:

Q. How soon should I make a reservation?

There is never any pressure to book with us, but whenever you are ready – the sooner the better! We open reservations for the upcoming year in March the year before (example: for the 2027 season, reservations will be opened March 1st, 2026). If you are looking for last minute week of or day of reservations we will need as much time as you can give us to confirm your reservation and open up a new tour if needed.

Q. How do I make a reservation?

If you would like to make a reservation please email us or fill out the form on our website – you are also welcome to give us a call. Please be sure to include the name of the cruise ship you will be arriving on (or when your flight arrives & how long you will be in Juneau), the date you will be in Juneau & the number of people in your party. All this information will allow us to tell you are availability efficiently.

Q. What if I have other tours planned for my day in Juneau?

Not a problem! When inquiring about a reservation, please tell us what tour you have scheduled already or tours you’re hoping to reserve the same day.   If time allows, we can either pick you up from your finished tour or drop you off there after our whale watching tour; dependent on the location of that tour. Knowing your time in Juneau is limited, we are willing to work within your time frame to make the most of your experience.

Q. What if my party is traveling with more than six people, can you still reserve me?

Since our boats are only certified to hold six passengers or less there are a couple different options:

  1. We can take part of your party members at one time and the other part right after.
  1. We now have four separate 6-passenger boats within Jayleen’s Alaska. If a group of more than 6 people would like to tour half of your party could tour on one boat, with the other half on the other boat. This is called a tandem tour and the boats would travel together the whole time, which would allow for some good group photos. The price for a tandem tour costs $1,150.00 per boat.
Q. Do you offer a discount for children?

Due to the very limited spaces available on each of our vessels and the US Coast Guard considering humans of any age (infants to adults) to take up one of the 6 spaces available at any given time on each of our boats, all passengers are the same price.

With that said, there are medium-sized companies in Juneau that probably offer children’s prices and we would be happy to recommend a couple to you.

Q. Do you ask for a deposit?

Yes, we ask for a 20% deposit at the time that you confirm your reservation – or if you are booking more than one year in advance we will ask for the 20% deposit to be paid on January 1st of the year you will be touring with us.

Q. How do we pay you?

Payment will be accepted through a custom Square Invoice sent directly to your email. This invoice will also include all the important details for your tour – including information as to where we will be able to meet you for your pickup in downtown Juneau.

Q. How do I know if I’m reserved?

You are reserved when you have received the Square Invoice, esigned our liability waiver & paid the 20% deposit.

Q. What if you are full?

If we are full we will send you recommendations for other tour operators in the Juneau area. We encourage you to research them independently to find the best fit for you and your group.  We will also offer you the opportunity to be added to our waitlist – with the understanding that we will reach out to you if anything opens up & there are no guarantees that space will open.

Transportation Questions:

Q. Is transportation included in the price?

Yes! If you are arriving on a cruise ship this means we will pick you up at the dock at which your cruise ship arrives, bring you to the harbor for your tour and return you back downtown Juneau after the tour.

If you travelled to Juneau independent of the cruise ships and are staying in town locally, we can also accommodate picking up and dropping you off at the major hotel locations or at a general location in downtown Juneau if you are staying at an Airbnb or rental.

Q. Where exactly will I meet you for my tour?

This depends on which dock your cruise ship will be arriving at. We receive the docking schedule annually in March and will be able to update your reservation with the exact meeting location at a later date if you reserve prior to March.
If you book after the annual docking location is finalized we will be able to provide you with detailed meeting location instructions at the time of your booking. If you would like to preview the different docking locations and pickups you can visit our meeting location page: https://jayleensalaska.com/meetinglocation/

If you are not arriving to Juneau on a cruise ship you will need to provide us with the name of the hotel you are staying or the address of the Airbnb or rental. We will organize a meeting location as close as possible
If you have a rental car and would prefer to drive yourself to the harbor the boat will depart from, we will provide you with directions, the exact address and parking instructions.

Q. Does the four-hour tour include transportation time?

Yes! The four hours referenced refers to three hours of time on board the boat & the land transportation to and from downtown Juneau adds another hour to the tour time.

For example, if we schedule to meet in downtown Juneau at 0800, you will be driven to the harbor where the boat is located and arrive there at ~0830. You will spend from ~0830 to ~1130 on board the boat. Get back into the courtesy shuttle and be dropped off downtown again (after your tour) at 1200.

Q. What do your vans look like?

In the 2025 Season we will be using the following:
Raven; our 15 passenger Chevy Express
Orca; our 12 passenger Ford Econo Wagon
Fluke; our 6 passenger Dodge Grand Caravan
Sasha; our 6 passenger Honda Odyssey

If you have a specific preference in van please reach out – we will do our best to accommodate this preference if we can.

Q. Can you fit a mobility scooter or wheelchair in the vans?

ONLY if they fold down or are travel sized. Full sized scooters or wheelchairs that do not fold down will not fit in our vehicles and they will need to be left in the van during the time you will be on the boat. There is not space on the boat to store these items.

Q. What if we sleep-in late and we are late for your courtesy shuttle?

We will be able to wait for 10 minutes after your scheduled meeting time for your tour. After that we will need to move on to keep in sync with our daily schedule. Since our tours are usually shared with other guests we need consider everyone’s experience – it is very important to be on time! If you completely miss the tour & there is space on a later tour we’ll do our best to reschedule, but we can’t guarantee it.

Q. Can you drop me off or pick me up at the Mendenhall Glacier area?

We are unable to pickup at or drop off to the Mendenhall Glacier area directly – but we realize that the Mendenhall Glacier is an important thing for our passengers to see!

Our view of the glacier is from the water, while you’re on our boat whale watching – our captains will make a viewing stop, as long as weather & clouds allow us to see it – while viewing they will explain some of the history of the glacier and how it has helped to create an environment where whales thrive.

If you are interested in touring the Mendenhall Glacier on your own – you could contact a taxi:

The cost breakdown for a taxi should look something like this:

  • $20 harbor to the glacier
  • $20 per person for glacier permit pass – purchased from taxi driver (this includes dispatcher fees & convenience fees)
  • $45 glacier to downtown Juneau/cruise ship dock

We’ve used the following taxi companies in the past:

  • Juneau Taxi – 907-586-1111
  • DLUX Rides – 907-586-2121
  • Capital Cab – 907-586-2772

You would tell them that you need a taxi to meet you at Fisherman’s Bend Marina (the time that we will return to the harbor that we leave from and return to) – 1.5hr to 2hrs is plenty of time at the Glacier area – so you could arrange to have him meet you back at the Glacier area and then it is a 25 – 30min drive back to downtown Juneau area.

We suggest calling your chosen cab company at least two hours before you would like to be picked up at the Mendenhall Glacier area & making a reservation for the time you would like to be met. They will take your name & cell phone number and will call you when they arrive.

Tour Questions:

Q. What kind of boats do you use? What do they look like?

In the 2025 season we will be using the following boats, the links next to them are links to pages on our website about each one of our vessels & a video about each boat that has been posted on our Instagram.

Q. What type of whales can I expect to see?

We have seen Humpback Whales on 100% of our tours to date. There is also a chance of seeing Orca Whales (about 15% of tours see these) and Minke Whales (about 1% of tours see these).

Q. Will we only see whales? Is there other wildlife we can see?

We have the potential to see, lots of other wildlife, including: Bald Eagles, Stellar Sea Lions, Harbor Seals, Dalls Porpoise, Harbor Porpoise and many different types of sea birds.

Q. Will I see any glaciers on our tour?

Yes! If the clouds are high enough on the day of your tour (they usually are) we have the chance to see the Herbert Glacier, Eagle Glacier, Nugget Glacier & Mendenhall Glacier. Here is a video of the views we see; footage taken during some of our tours.

Q. How long am I actually on the water?

You will be on the water for a total of three hours, on our standard & private tour options.

Q. How many whales can we expect to see?

Our tours could travel a 30 to 50 mile radius and within that radius, since the whales are constantly moving passengers might see anywhere from 1 to 20 whales during a tour.

Q. Is there a better time of day to see whales?

Whales breathe at the surface of the water every ~7-20 minutes all day long – morning, afternoon & evening. From what we have noticed over the last 9 years of operating tours is that there doesn’t seem to be a consistent better or worse time to spot Humpback Whales. However, the activity that they decide to show you during your tour time is completely up to them.

Q. How close can our captain get to the whales?

Since Humpback Whales are still endangered, it is federal law that all vessels must stay 100 yards away. We are also not allowed to cut off their movements to make them move closer to the boat. If these laws are broken then the captain risks thousands of dollars in fines—it is in everyone’s best interest, whales included, if these laws are respected.

Q. What kind of activity can we expect to see from the Humpback Whales?

We expect them to spout (breathe) with 30 seconds between each spout with 3-5 spouts per surface time. After they are done spouting, they will do a terminal dive – meaning they will show a big hump in their back & hopefully show their tail as they dive and disappear under the water for 5-15 minutes while they eat food at about 100ft – 300ft of water. This is their regular behavior in the feeding grounds of Alaska – anything extra; breaching, bubble net feeding or tail lobbing is not required for them to live their lives and is rare to see! If you see this extra behavior you are on a lucky tour!

Q. Do you have a whale sighting guarantee?

We don’t. We firmly believe that a respectful wildlife tour should never put pressure on the wildlife. With that being said, we have been able to find & respectfully watch at least 1 whale on all of our tours since we opened in 2015. IF we ever do not see a whale on a tour we intend to give you a full refund for your tour.

Q. Am I allowed to use a drone on your whale watching tours?

Unfortunately, we are unable to allow you to use drones on our tours. There is a permit that is required for any drone use in the Juneau area because of how close the waterways are to the Juneau airport and the corresponding flight patterns.

Q. How big are the steps into the boats?

There are two large steps into our vessels, the largest step is 16” high. There is a two-step Rubbermaid step stool inside the boat and solid handholds to assist. If you would like, watch a video of how we recommend getting into our boats.

Q. What does the dock that you leave from look like?

There is a ~100 yard walk from the parking area, where you will get out of our courtesy shuttle down to where the boats are parked. You will cross the parking lot and walk down a harbor ramp that is about 30ft long. This ramp can be steep or flat, depending on our 24ft tidal change during your tour. Once you get down to the actual dock it is a treated wood dock that can be slippery at times, you will need to watch your step and be aware of your surroundings. Your captain will be with you the entire time and guide you to and into the boat.

Here is a video of what to expect on the dock.

Q. Is there a restroom on all your boats?

Yes! It is a marine head—meaning it is very small, but fully functioning.

Q. Is the boat covered? Do the boats have heaters?

Yes! All our boats are fully covered with doors to the front bow and back deck that close for protection from the wind and rain. In contrast on warm days the windows and back door can be left open to cool the cabin.
Each boat is equipped with a small cabin heater, but we recommend that you come prepared by dressing in warm layers and bringing a rain jacket. Packing a light pair of gloves & a hat are also a good idea to bring along, just in case.

Q. Are smoking, alcohol or drugs allowed on board the boat?

No they are not. We are sorry if this proves to be an inconvenience, however we chose to do this for the general safety of passengers onboard. It is a federal law that there can be no drugs while on board a commercial vessel.

Q. What happens if our cruise ship leaves without us because of your tour being late?

We are aware of cruise ship port times and will not schedule a tour if the cruise ship departure is less than an hour of when our tour ends.  If, for reasons beyond our power, we are not able to get you to your cruise ship on time, we will make sure you make it to your next port whether we have to fly you or take you there by boat ourselves – on our dime. We will also pay for any necessary lodging & food if we cannot get you there in the same day.

For the enjoyment of our passengers, we strive to make our tours fun and stress free.  If passengers are too worried that their ship will leave without them then this creates a stressful environment for passengers as well as the captain—so we avoid those feelings as much as possible!

Q. What are the negatives of your tours?

We are the ‘small’ boat option – it is the only option we offer & we do it well but a larger boat may provide a smoother ride in rough waters. Because of our boutique tour style there is a bit of a walk (approx. 100 yards) from the parking lot where your courtesy shuttle van will park to where the boats are parked in the marina. We are not wheelchair or mobility scooter accessible.

Weather/Cancellation Questions:

Q. What can I expect from Juneau weather?

Rain! The area around Juneau is considered a temperate rain forest and chances are high that it will rain. If it’s not raining it will probably be cloudy with temperatures in the 50s to 60s. If you are one of the few that has sunny weather consider yourself lucky! Temperatures on the boats can be 10 degrees cooler due to wind coming off the ocean – because of this wide diversity of weather we recommend wearing layers that can help accommodate this range of temperatures.

Q. How often do passengers get sick?

We had 3 passengers physically get sick on our tours since 2015. The waters that surround Juneau are inside passages, which means that we will not be on open waters during the tour at anytime. That is not to say that it doesn’t get rough sometimes—if you are prone to seasickness a couple Dramamine may not be a bad idea. Just in case. ☺

Q. What happens if the water is too rough?

If the water gets too rough you will be notified as soon as possible that the tour will be cancelled and a 100% refund will be given.

Q. What is your cancellation policy?

If you cancel your tour after paying the deposit the following cancellation fees will apply:

  • 7 days or more before your tour: A cancellation fee of 5% of your total tour cost will apply.
  • 1 to 7 days before your tour: A cancellation fee of 20% of your total tour cost will apply.
  • Within 24 hours of your tour: If you cancel within 24 hours of your tour, or do not show up for your scheduled tour, no refund will be given.

Exceptions to the cancellation policy:

  • If your cruise ship or flight does not arrive in Juneau due to cancellation or delay, a full refund will be given (documentation is required).
  • If you have to cancel your entire trip due to illness or injury, a full refund will be given (documentation is required).
  • If you reschedule your trip for a different date, no cancellation fee will apply.
